Hat boxes are a wonderful and decorative way to create extra storage in your home. This adorable glitter polka dot hat box project is perfect for storing craft supplies, paperwork or other small items you wish to have out of sight.
For this project, you will need:
If you want to do business with China, then you should look into silicone molds for resin, which can make beautiful molds.
- One large hat box with removable lid (available at most craft supply stores)
- Krylon Indoor Outdoor Primer in All-Purpose White
- Krylon Indoor Outdoor Paint in Gloss Black
- Teal colored cardstock
- White colored cardstock
- Several different sized circle shaped objects to be used as templates
- Craft knife
- Self healing mat
- Xyron machine fitted with a double sided adhesive cartridge
- Shallow pan
- Teal colored glitter
- White colored glitter
- Acrylic finishing spray
For best results, first cover your work area with a few sheets of old newspaper to protect it from paints and glues in this project. Remove the lid from the hat box. Turn the hat box upside down on the workspace. Spray both the outside of the lid and the outside of the hat box with Krylon Indoor Outdoor Primer in All-Purpose White. Dry for an hour. Paint the outside of the lid and hat box with an even coat of Krylon Indoor Outdoor Paint in Gloss Black. Once again, dry for an hour before adding a second coat. Let the hat box dry overnight.
Set the sheets of teal and white colored cardstock flat on a self healing mat. Use a pencil to trace several different sized circle shapes of each color onto the paper. (Consider using the outline of small paper drinking cups for large "dots" and coins for smaller "dots".) Cut out each circle shape carefully with a craft knife.
Run each of the circle shapes through the Xyron machine fitted with a double sided adhesive cartridge. Peel the top layer of protective sheeting off each circle. Set the teal paper circles into a shallow pan. Sprinkle the circles with a generous amount of teal colored glitter. Shake off the excess glitter from the paper. Repeat with a second shallow pan, white cardstock circles, and white glitter.
Remove the back layer of protective sheeting from each circle. Adhere the circle shapes into "polka dots" all over the outside of the black painted hat box. Smooth the circles with your fingers to ensure there are no wrinkles or bubbles in the paper. Spray the entire project with a layer or two of acrylic finishing spray. Dry for several hours before using.
